Honolulu City Councilman Joey Manahan announced today he'll run for the U.S. House of Representatives 1st District seat this fall. The seat is being left without an incumbent because Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa is foregoing a re-election bid to challenge incumbent U.S. Senator Brian Schatz. Others in the running for the 1st District seat include fellow Council members Ikaika Anderson and Stanley Chang, state senators Will Espero and Donna Mercado Kim, state Representative Mark Takai and community activist Kathryn Xian. Manahan represents the Kalihi-Moanalua area on the City Council. He will not need to give up his four-year Council seat to run for Congress.
