The University of Hawaii Board of Regents voted Monday to hire interim president David Lassner as its new leader. The vote was 11-2, with two abstentions. Regents Tom Shigemoto and Coralie Chun Matayoshi voted for the other candidate -- retired Army Lieutenant General Frank Wiercinski. Jeffrey Portnoy and Benjamin Kudo abstained. Lassner's appointment will be effective July 1 and his annual salary will be $375,000. His appointment is at-will and he'll be evaluated every year. Other U.H. presidents in the past were given multi-year contracts.
