Hawaii has the second lowest gun death rate in the nation, according to the Violence Policy Center. The nonprofit, which advocates for gun control, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its latest figures on overall gun death rates in 2011. Hawaii's gun death rate was 3.56 per 100,000 people. Hawaii is among the states with strong gun violence prevention laws and low rates of gun ownership. The state with the highest per capita gun death rate was Louisiana, while Rhode Island had the lowest.
