The University of Hawaii at Manoa athletic program is facing a $2 million deficit for the fiscal year which ends June 30th. That's $1 million more than last year. Athletic Director Ben Jay told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that he's trying to keep it under $2 million. In May 2013 Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple gave the athletic department three years to balance its books saying the deficit should not run beyond $1 million in any of those years. Jay said Apple agreed to give him flexibility on the issue. The department has posted a surplus in only two years in the past decade.
