Test scores in math and reading for students in public schools across the state are slightly down. 59% of island students tested proficient in math for the 2013 - 2014 school year. That's down from 60% the year before. The state Department of Education also said students' scores in reading were also down, with 69% proficient, compared to 72% the year before. Education officials say they expected a drop, as the state continues its transition to a more rigorous set of curriculum standards and as schools gear up for a new standardized assessment this year.
