Four employees at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki filed unfair labor practice charges against UniteHere Local 5. The four allege that when the collective bargaining agreement expired in June 2010, they resigned their union membership, exercising the option to refrain from union dues payments. They contend that Local 5 is charging the workers for union dues and fees from June 2012 to August 2013, though the new Local 5 contract covering Hyatt workers was approved in July of 2013. The national office of UNITE HERE at the time said the new agreement covered retroactive pay increases and maintenance of health care and pension benefits. The National Labor Relations Board will investigate the charges.
