Police say speed was a factor in a fiery single-car crash on the North Shore Monday night, which killed the driver. Witnesses told police the man was speeding southbound on Kamehameha Highway and cutting in and out of traffic when he lost control of the vehicle just before 6:30 p.m. and crashed into a utility pole, landing in a pineapple field near Paa-laa Uka Pupukea Road. A witness was trying to pull the driver from the car when it burst into flames. When firefighters arrived, the car was fully engulfed in flames. The driver was burned beyond recognition and pronounced dead at the scene. The road was closed in both directions between Kamananui Road and Joseph P. Leong Highway while police conducted their investigation. It was reopened at 11 p.m.
